Admission Requirements for Higher Education in Israel

Depending upon the level of study one is aiming for, entrance requirements for higher education in Israel vary. However, what one must essentially possess is a good understanding of Hebrew if one is pursuing non English medium courses. For courses taught specifically in English medium, students have to understand and meet specific language requirements such as TOEFL or its equivalent.

Students must also have sufficient comprehension of Hebrew to take part in regular studies. For ensuring proficiency in Hebrew, certain universities make it compulsory for global students to take part in a language course in Hebrew called Ulpan. This is studied prior to the commencement of regular courses. Numerous programmes are present to enable students to polish their skill in this language.

Entrance Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree in Israel

Admission Criteria: To qualify for entry into undergraduate degree courses in Israel, students require a high school diploma equivalent to the bagrut in Israel. Students who do not have equivalent diplomas should complete one year at a foreign university. They can also enter pre-academy preparatory program to get the qualifications they need.

Psychometric Assessments: Students are also required to appear in a psychometric entrance examination such as the NITE/National Institute of Testing and Evaluation Psychometric Entrance Test or SAT/Scholastic Aptitude Test in the US. Certain higher educational institutions also have additional requirements such as interviews or more tests. NITE is offered in several different languages and locations across the world and the test can be undertaken unlimited number of times. Each time the test is taken must be apart by 10 months. Results of the NITE are valid for 5 years.

Certain courses also require students to be Israeli citizens- this includes courses such as dental medicine, medicine, veterinary medicine, speech therapy and physical therapy

Master Degree Admission Requirements in Israel

Admission Criteria: Entrance requirements to master’s degree courses include a good B average in the concerned Bachelor’s degree course. Certain programmes require better grades. Some also need GRE/GMAT scores as well as personal interviews. Undergraduate degree courses in Israel are extremely specialised and interdisciplinary. Students therefore need to take supplementary additional courses along with the standard program.

Doctorate Degree Admission Requirements in Israel

Admission Criteria: For doctoral degree programmes, students need to possess a master’s degree with an excellent thesis and good grade average. Specific requirements were established by each individual school or program. Certain universities also provide Direct Doctoral Programs for exceptional students at Bachelor’s degree levels. The first year is therefore an accelerated master’s program.

Doctoral students should also have achievements in undergraduate course level and excellent achievements in graduate course level. High GRE/GMAT scores are an added bonus. International students who do not hold an Israeli citizenship should apply for scholarship.

Language Requirements for Admission into Higher Education

Hebrew

If the course is Hebrew medium, then international students should study a basic, elementary Hebrew course before commencing with their studies. Fresh immigrants known as Olim are needed to pass a test in Hebrew before their admission. Test for proficiency in Hebrew is given 3 times in a year namely June, September and January

English

Textbooks as well as scientific papers require understanding of English, if the course is non Hebrew medium. Knowledge of English language is vital in such cases. Applicants from nations where English is a spoken language who hold either a high school diploma or an academic type of degree are not mandated to give the English test. Foreign applicants from non English speaking nations that are not Olim must pass their English test before or towards the start of the commencement of the first semester. If GRE/GMAT is taken with a verbal score of 75% or more, students are exempted from demonstrating proficiency in English.

Students who are enrolled in English academic programs such as MBA are exempt from knowing Hebrew.
